Elena Catero, a member of our Appfire team from Spain, embarked on a life-changing journey to Moshi, a municipality and the capital of the Kilimanjaro region in northeastern Tanzania, in 2022 to immerse herself in African culture and contribute to meaningful social change.

Personal growth through volunteering

Elena’s journey was more than just giving back — it was an opportunity for personal growth. Alongside another volunteer, Alba, she found inspiration in the simplicity of life in Moshi, where smiles and kindness were abundant, even without material wealth. For Elena and Alba, volunteering revealed a deeper understanding of local traditions and helped them shed preconceived biases.

Collaborating for change

During their time in Moshi, Elena and Alba discovered the important work being done by Asociación Nyumbani Nala, a small NGO dedicated to supporting marginalized children and teens in the Kilimanjaro region. Elena saw the potential for an even more significant impact through collaborations between Appfire Town and Nyumbani Nala, imagining the ripple effect of how Appfire Town and other partners within the broader Atlassian ecosystem can further support such efforts.

The power of giving

Elena’s time in Moshi highlighted how volunteerism can create lasting connections, promote education, and inspire social change and reminds us that giving back and embracing cultural exchange can lead to personal and collective growth — a testament to how small, meaningful actions can ripple outward, transforming lives and communities.

Since Elena’s first visit to Moshi nearly five years ago, Appfire Town has expanded its regional impact. One of our key initiatives is supporting Gideon, a young man raised in a local orphanage who now offers free computer classes to the city’s children. To help ensure their long-term success, we’ve funded a hostel project, providing Gideon with the tools to achieve economic independence. The hostel will feature 13 beds — two rooms with private bathrooms and two with shared facilities—allowing them to welcome visitors while generating additional income to sustain their computer academy.

This initiative empowers Gideon and strengthens the local community, creating a sustainable education and economic growth model. It’s a perfect example of how a single act of giving can create a ripple effect, leading to lasting, positive change.
