"A success metric for me is when I don’t have any issues with an app and don’t need to reach out to the support team—and that’s the case with JMWE."

Nokia is a well-known telecommunications and IT giant, as well as a global leader in mobile, fixed, and cloud networks. But how does a company of this scale streamline and automate its workflows and processes across multiple business units?

We’ve spoken with Ferenc Ghido, who is a Solutions Architect, to learn how JMWE helped Nokia improve workflow automation, standardize processes, and streamline complex Jira workflows—without deep scripting expertise. And with the right automation in place, Nokia didn’t just streamline workflows—they reclaimed over 16 hours per week, freeing teams from tedious manual work.

Ferenc walks us through the challenges they faced, the solutions they implemented, and the long-term benefits they’ve seen.

Why Nokia needed a smarter way to standardize Jira workflows

At Nokia, managing multiple Jira instances led to disconnected processes, fragmented workflows, and limited visibility across teams. While some shared similar processes, most had their own unique approach to backlog management, issue tracking, and risk management, requiring custom configurations and automation to stay efficient. This lack of standardization resulted in manual workarounds, duplicated efforts, and inefficiencies, making it clear that a more unified system was needed.

"Each of these teams work based on their processes—some common, but mostly unique," explains Ferenc Ghido.

As a result, Nokia’s Jira instances became siloed, forcing teams to rely on time-consuming manual work just to keep processes aligned. Inconsistent workflows, duplicated efforts, and a lack of visibility across projects made it clear that an automation solution was needed.

Finding an automation tool that balances power and simplicity

Ferenc’s team was looking for an automation solution that would simplify their workflows, cut down on manual tasks, and scale effortlessly. It also had to handle cross-project workflows, track issues across multiple releases, and manage advanced field validations—all without adding extra complexity.

While Nokia used Jira’s built-in functionality for basic automation, it wasn’t enough to fully support Nokia’s needs. It lacked the flexibility to manage complex issue tracking across multiple releases, advanced field validation requirements, and workflow automation across different business units. As Nokia’s operations grew, it became clear they needed a more powerful and adaptable solution.

Ferenc explored other automation solutions, including ScriptRunner, but found they required extensive technical expertise and constant testing. While powerful, its complexity made it difficult for non-developers to maintain.

"Everything can be done in ScriptRunner, but JMWE is easier to learn, easier to see, and easier to test," he points out.

They needed a solution that could handle enterprise-level automation without adding unnecessary complexity.

How JMWE helped bridge the automation gap

Nokia found their answer in JMWE—powerful enough for advanced automation, yet simple enough for teams without deep scripting knowledge.

Since Ferenc manages Jira administration, JMWE’s low-code interface enabled him and his team to easily set up automations without scripting, making it a flexible and scalable solution. Unlike script-heavy alternatives, JMWE struck the right balance between power and ease of use, enabling teams to configure complex workflows with minimal coding. This made automation simpler to implement, test, and maintain across teams.

"We use JMWE for a lot of things – post functions, field copying, notifications. It’s multipurpose, and that’s what makes it powerful," highlights Ferenc Ghido.

With JMWE, Nokia standardized workflows across multiple business units, reducing manual effort and improving efficiency. Some of the most impactful automations included:

  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Automation – JMWE automatically creates and links RCA tickets for critical bugs, ensuring fast resolution. Post functions handle issue cloning, field copying, and custom assignments, ensuring all related issues stay properly linked.
  • Issue Propagation Across Versions – When a fix needs to be applied in multiple releases, JMWE automatically keeps issues synchronized by cloning them across product versions to prevent manual duplication. Pre-built automation templates streamline the process, reducing the need for custom development.
  • Automated Email Notifications – JMWE keeps teams in the loop with automated email alerts triggered by workflow status and conditions. These help teams react faster, stay informed, and reduce response times, improving overall coordination.

With JMWE, Nokia eliminated manual tasks, improved workflow accuracy, and made cross-team collaboration more efficient—without adding complexity.

How Nokia transformed workflows and saved 16+ hours per week

The changes implemented with JMWE saved Nokia time and reduced manual errors. JMWE didn’t just improve efficiency—it fundamentally changed how Ferenc and his teams work, as he states:

"If we had to do this manually, it would take at least half a day per person, and even then, mistakes would happen."

By automating root cause analysis, issue cloning, and workflow transitions, JMWE allowed them to save over 16 hours weekly to spend on more important work.

Beyond saving time, JMWE helps Ferenc and his team standardize automation while remaining flexible for different teams. Faster ticket resolution means teams can quickly respond to critical defects and versioning needs, keeping their projects on track.

With JMWE, Nokia also reduced the need for manual Jira configuration, freeing up IT resources to focus on more strategic tasks. Workflow validators ensured that required fields were properly filled at the right transition stages, improving data accuracy and process reliability. Pre-built templates minimize the need for custom development, allowing teams to implement automation faster and with less effort. Additionally, built-in testing capabilities enabled teams to validate workflow logic before deployment, ensuring smooth and error-free automation.

JMWE didn’t just save Nokia time. It helped them transform the way they work. Automation eliminates bottlenecks, reduces errors, and empowers Ferenc and his team to focus on innovation, efficiency, and delivering high-quality results—without getting stuck in manual processes.
